Raising Awareness…

24/09/2020

Choosing your next read can be daunting, particularly when faced with so much choice, but it can be particularly challenging for unconfident readers. Variety is key to broadening horizons and assisting readers to explore new authors, genres and formats.

It is, therefore, necessary to bring ranges closer to the reader and to draw attention to the breadth and variety available to them. Why not create a section “Our choice of the week”, “Our favourites”, “Our summer selection” “Books about Love” “Stories Tackling race” New Non-Fiction Titles, etc.

These displays ensure a thorough rotation of the entire collection but also to help teenagers discover titles that are new, relevant, or stimulating.

Playing a vital role in circulation rates, easels are excellent tools for creating simple displays beautifully and cost-effectively.

Displays should be current, changed regularly, and should meet the interests and needs of your library community.

Quality wall displays and shelving units are also a helpful tool in your setup and assist in the clear promotion of books in your library:

Top 5 Display Considerations

  • The books should be the stars of the display

Choose books with fresh, visually appealing covers in good condition.

  • Displays should be popular

While time should be spent filling a display fixture, the ultimate goal is for it to be empty! If, after a day or so, the same books are still on the display unit, consider a new topic.

  • Use props judiciously!

A beach ball and a towel for a travel display, Wonka bars and golden tickets for Roald Dahl, or seasonal displays with Autumn leaves or Christmas decorations. You want browsers to interact with the display by taking items off. You don’t want them to feel that if they do that, they will be messing up a work of art.

  • Let current events inspire your displays

Relate your collection to real life. The Black Lives Matter movement, American Presidential elections, Covid-19, mental health, and wellbeing would make for topical displays and associated literature.

  • Make checkout clear

You want them to check display items out, so make it clear that they can. This may be obvious to us, but it is not always so for our customers. Use stickers and signage within your display.

Awarded annually to the best novel of the year, the Booker Prize is the leading literary award in the English-speaking world and is the perfect opportunity to showcase some outstanding modern fiction.
